Event Description and Talking Points

This event aims at facilitating cross-regional reflections on justice for conflict-related sexual violence. What does it encompass? What are the challenges and prospects of ending impunity in different contexts? What should we do differently as global allies? Panelists from Serbia, Sri Lanka, Syria, and Sudan will reflect on their efforts to seek reparative and healing justice for victims and survivors of conflict-related sexual violence. Together with representatives from the ICC and OHCHR, they will discuss challenges with existing international mechanisms for justice. The event is organized in collaboration with Global Fund for Women and moderated by Women’s International Peace Centre.

Panel Subject

Justice for victims of sexual violence in conflict and post-conflict contexts is key to ensure safe and equal opportunities for women’s participation in decision making in conflict or in periods of transition. The end of a war does not mean an end to fear nor to threats to women’s safety. For women living in conflict and post-conflict situations, the possibility of freedom from violence will only become a living reality when all perpetrators of crimes of sexual violence are held accountable locally and/or internationally. The normalization of the culture of impunity for crimes of sexual violence in conflict and the continuous pursuit of  flawed and  superficial peace agreements rather than justice and accountability has led to the creation of unsafe environments for women while also leading to agreement that are neither equitable nor sustainable. Justice for crimes of sexual violence in conflict should not be viewed as individual redemption for victims; it is an essential deterrent against  future violence and a key guarantee for safety for all women.
